According to the third biggest wireless carrier in America, it is looking to commercially roll out Digits -- a feature that basically allows mobile users to move contact numbers between multiple handsets and even use more than one phone number on a single phone -- by next week. T-Mobile believes that the soon to be deployed service will have a significant impact on the wireless industry.
It was back in December of last year when T-Mobile first introduced its Digits service. At the time of Digits’ unveiling, the major US wireless carrier had made the program available free of charge for beta testing purposes. But the company did mention five months ago that it was planning an official launch some time this year.
And now that the Digits feature is about to go live, it has the potential to dramatically alter the usual one phone number on one mobile device set up encouraged by most of today’s wireless carriers. With T-Mobile’s new service, subscribers can enjoy the option of extending their phone number to tablet devices, wearable devices, and even desktop computers and laptops -- granting people the ability to make phone calls or send text messages between a range of devices with just a single digit.
Families or groups can also benefit immensely from the Digits service. For those planning to terminate their fixed line services, they now have the means to use their home phone numbers on mobile devices. As for those working on laptop devices all the time, they can make full use of Digits in calling or texting directly from their computers, as opposed to always checking their smartphones constantly.
Instead of being positioned as another source of revenue for T-Mobile, the mobile operator is content to promote Digits as a differentiated mobile offering. The company has already stated that it intends to upgrade every customer’s phone number to the service, free of charge, this coming May 31st. For subscribers with the Auto Pay option, they can get an extra Digits line for service for $10 each month. People who are planning to subscribe to T-Mobile’s One Plus unlimited data plan will be getting an additional Digits line of service at no extra cost but for a limited time only.
For those currently owning Samsung made mobile devices, know that T-Mobile’s Digits service is directly integrated into the native dialer of newer premium range Galaxy handsets. For other Android mobile users as well as iPhone owners, the feature will be made available by way of other apps for Android and iOS.
