In a bid to recover its status as the undisputed biggest smartphone vendor in the world, Samsung has formally introduced its latest flagship devices -- the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus. By way of a media event held in New York City, the South Korean tech giant showcased the 5.8 inch Galaxy S8 and the even bigger 6.2 inch Galaxy S8 Plus, with both phablets boasting an almost bezel-less design, a dual camera configuration, a 10 nanometer chip, and Samsung’s own Knox security feature.
Perhaps the most visible change is the absence of the traditional home button, with the newest additions to the Galaxy line of smartphones taking full advantage of both hardware and software in going for a virtual home button that never invades any display screen real estate. Also, the new devices come with Bixby, Samsung’s digital assistant answer to Apple’s Siri and Google’s Assistant.
According to Samsung, the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will be made available from the Big Four carriers in the United States (namely Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint), as well as from Cricket Wireless (AT&T’s prepaid arm), Straight Talk Wireless, and US Cellular. Prices usually vary depending on which mobile operator, but consumers can expect the new flagship offerings to start at $720 for the Galaxy S8 and at $840 for the Galaxy S8 Plus. Carriers, however, are expected to launch special offers for the devices, either with discounted pricing or with other bundled items.
After it stumbled with its Galaxy Note 7 phablet, Samsung needs a global hit quick, not only to repair its reputation but also to snatch back its lead in the premium smartphone market. Its Galaxy Note 7 went through a couple of recalls before the South Korean mobile manufacturer discontinued the device for good. As a result, Samsung lost its title to fierce rival Apple as the world’s biggest seller of smartphone devices during the final quarter of last year.
While Samsung is hoping its Galaxy S8 smartphones will become huge hits, some industry watchers are expecting the new Galaxy handsets to become the catalyst for innovation in the mobile world this year. The worldwide market for smartphones has dipped in the last few quarters, with consumers no longer that keen on buying new models, at least when compared to previous years. But now that the Galaxy S8 models are here, other phone makers should be trying to match what the newest Samsung flagships have to offer.
The Galaxy S8 features a 5.8 inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display screen with a resolution of 2,960 by 1,440 pixels. On its rear side, the phablet packs a dual pixel 12 megapixel camera, and then pairs it with an 8 megapixel selfie shooter on the front side. Processors wise, the devices are fitted with an eight core 64 bit 10 nanometer chip set, aided with 4 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 64 gigabytes of built in memory. Other notable features include an IP68 water proofing rating, a 3,000 mAh battery (3,500 mAh battery for the Galaxy S8 Plus), and Google’s Android 7.0 Nougat mobile operating system.
The Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will be launching on April 21st. Compare the new Galaxy S8 devices now to other models from Samsung at Wirefly now.
