LG has officially unveiled its latest flagship device, the G6, and its most eye catching features include extra tall display screen (it comes with an aspect ratio of 18:9; previous LG flagship models only offered a 16:9 aspect ratio), a frame that nearly has no bezels, and water proofing capabilities. And just as rumored (and later confirmed by the South Korean tech giant), the G6 does not have a modular design, and as such, does away with a removable battery.
The G6’s FullVision screen is a 5.7 inch Quad HD+ display that possesses a resolution of 2,880 by 1,440 pixels. Its 18:9 aspect ratio is similar to the Univisium standard, which aims to unify the aspect ratio as used in movies. With a 5.7 inch size, technically the handset is a phablet, but by virtue of its almost bezel-less design, the device actually is smaller.
Moreover, the G6 has support for both Dolby Vision (establishing another first milestone in the process) and HDR10 HDR standards, making it capable of rendering a broader range of colors and brightness levels, which should prove handy especially in playing HDR encoded content via Netflix and Amazon Prime. Also, buyers of the phablet will enjoy access to the G6 Game Collection, which comes with $200 worth of games optimized for the smartphone’s FullVision screen.
As far as cameras go, LG’s new G6 has a couple of cameras on the rear side -- one a regular 13 megapixel camera, and the other a wide angle 13 megapixel camera that features a 125 degree lens. As for the front side camera, it is a 5 megapixel selfie shooter with a 100 degree field of view. Inside, the G6 packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset, aided by 4 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) as well as 32 gigabytes of built in memory. The device also has a 3,300 mAh battery, Google’s Android Nougat mobile operating system, and the distinction of being the first non-Pixel device to be preinstalled with Google Assistant.
While last year’s G5 was an impressive offering, the modular design did not translate to sales for LG. This time with a back to basics approach, the South Korean phone maker is hoping that the G6 will attract more buyers this time, and compete better against Apple’s and Samsung’s upcoming respective flagship devices.
The G6 will be made available in three color options -- namely black, white, and platinum. To date, LG is yet to divulge details regarding pricing and availability. To compare the G6 to other devices, you can browse more handsets from LG at Wirefly now.
