Huawei recently announced the newest addition to its Honor lineup of budget friendly smartphone devices. Make way for the Honor 9, which is basically the successor to the Honor 8, the handset the Chinese phone maker had introduced back in August of last year, supposedly for the millennial generation. Wait -- didn’t the company just unveil the Honor 8 Pro last April? Yup, it did, but the new Honor 9 flagship offering differs in a couple of aspects -- size and pricing.
First, the size -- Huawei’s new Honor 9 has a rather modest 5.15 inch size display screen, but with a resolution of 1,080 p, it is quite capable. The screen is complemented with a dual camera set up on the rear side, consisting of a 20 megapixel camera and a 12 megapixel lens. On the front side, the device packs an 8 megapixel selfie shooter (with f/2.0 aperture).
As far as hardware specs are concerned, the Honor 9 offers an eight core Kirin 960 chip set (made up of four 2.4 GigaHertz cores as well as another four 1.8 GigaHertz cores), aided by 4 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 64 gigabytes of built in memory (which can be further expanded up to 256 gigabytes of storage space with the use of a micro SD card). Other notable features include a fingerprint reader, a non-removable Li-Po 3,200 mAh battery, and color options that include midnight black, gold, sapphire blue, and glacier gray.
With regards to software, Huawei’s Honor 9 comes preinstalled with Google’s Android 7.0 Nougat, paired with the Chinese mobile giant’s own Emotion UI 5.1. The company has taken some flak in past years because of underwhelming versions of EMUI, but lately, the phone maker has improved significantly when it comes to software.
Now we get to the pricing. The Honor 9 fetches for about $485 (without a SIM card), which is not bad when one considers the device’s specifications and features (more on these later), and should allow the handset to compete well with other so called affordable phones already out in the market. Perhaps its closest rival is Motorola’s Moto Z Play, which offers a 5.5 inch display screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chip set, 3 gigabytes of RAM, 32 gigabytes of memory, and a 3,510 mAh battery. The Honor 9 is more than a hundred dollars cheaper than the Honor 8 Pro and over $200 cheaper than the Huawei P10 phablet.
Huawei’s latest is already made available for preordering through Amazon and Vmall, and it should hit Three outlets by next month.
