Andy Rubin is considered by most of the tech world as the Father of Android. In recent years, he has since set up his own startup firm called Essential Products, and just a few days ago, officially unveiled the company’s first ever flagship device, the Essential. Rubin had actually teased the device back in March early this year by way of a picture posted on Twitter.
Basically, the Essential Phone squarely belongs in the phablet category, with an imposing 5.7 inch Corning Gorilla Glass 5 display with a resolution of 2,560 by 1,312 pixels, a screen density of 504 pixels per inch, and an aspect ratio of 19:10. The sleek screen is flanked by a 13 megapixel dual camera on the rear side, and an 8 megapixel camera on the front side.
As far as hardware specifications are concerned, the Essential Phone packs a 64 bit 2.45 GigaHertz Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip set that is supported by 4 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) as well as 128 gigabytes of built in memory. Other notable features include a quick charging USB C port, a modular connector, a fingerprint scanner on the rear side, and a 3,040 mAh battery. It should be noted though that the Essential Phone does not come with any headphone jack, or any SD card slot.
Interested buyers may already be wondering where they can buy the Essential Phone. To date, the device is not being pushed by any wireless carrier right now in the United States mobile market. Those looking to purchase one as soon as possible may be delighted to know that they can make a reservation for the device by way of Essential’s official website.
Carrier availability concerns notwithstanding, users should know that the Essential Phone is an unlocked device, which means that it can work perfectly fine with any of the Big Four carriers in America (Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint). The phablet is made available in color options of Black Moon, Stellar Grey, Pure White, and Ocean Depths. With regards to pricing, it starts at $699, but users can purchase a unit with a 360 degree camera for $749.
By the way, the 360 degree camera can stick to the Essential Phone via magnetic pins at the rear. Apart from the Essential Phone and the 360 degree camera, Rubin’s company also unveiled the Essential Home, a smart speaker that comes with a large round display and is powered by the new Ambient operating system.
