More than a dozen years after making its debut, and just half a decade since reaching a billion users every month, the biggest social media platform in the planet has now hit a couple of billion active users on a monthly basis. To celebrate this impressive milestone, Facebook is offering a personalized “Good Adds Up” video that its users can create and even share to other users as well.
Among mobile apps that belong to the social category, the Facebook app is now the undisputed king -- its 2 billion monthly users is comfortably ahead of the competition (that are not owned by Facebook): Google’s YouTube (1.5 billion monthly users), WeChat (with 889 million monthly users), Twitter (328 million monthly users), and Snapchat (255 million monthly users). So what about Facebook’s other branded apps? They fared very well actually, with WhatsApp and Messenger scoring 1.2 billion monthly users each. As for Instagram, it recently breached the 700th million mark, and it should reach the billions club soon.
Much of Facebook’s increase in popularity in the last few years can be attributed to users based from the developing world. Some may remember that relatively recently, the social media giant has optimized its main mobile app so that it could be used on ultra affordable Android powered smartphone devices, even with low bandwidth web services. After it had hit a billion users, Facebook has since gained 746 million more users, coming from Asia and the Rest of World region. 746 million is a very high number, at least when compared to the 41 million users added from the United States and Canada.
With a 17 percent growth in user count, Facebook’s reach is expanding faster now than ever, except maybe in 2012. And remarkably, about two thirds of the social media platform’s monthly users return every day, compared to the 55 percent it had registered when it first reached 1 billion users.
As it continues its world dominating ways, Facebook also took the opportunity to announce a new mission statement -- “Give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.” This mission may be as bold as it is simple and succinct. It would be hard to deny that Facebook has minimal impact in this day and age, and perhaps apart from Google, there might be no other tech company as influential as Mark Zuckerberg’s company in affecting how people’s lives will be shaped in the near future.
