FierceWireless has joined forces with P3 in breaking down just how much cellular and Wi-Fi data are today’s mobile users using and which apps they are using on the networks of the four biggest wireless carriers in the United States (namely Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint). For those not familiar with P3, it is an international consulting and management services firm that, among others, gathers information regarding mobile usage in America from thousands of consumers and from millions of samples collected across the country. Through a recent deal it struck with research firm Strategy Analytics, P3 has collated its data with the demographic and psychographic data acquired by Strategy Analytics’ AppOptix, a platform for monitoring mobile usage in real time. For the data pertaining to the first quarter of this year, information was gathered from an estimated 5,200 consumers and from over 10 million mobile app sessions.
In terms of the frequency of app usage on a cellular network, Verizon Wireless registered a slight increase, unlike other members of the Big Four who all suffered a decrease in app activity. When it comes to Wi-Fi usage, all carriers appear to head towards increasing Wi-Fi sessions. Sprint in particular downloaded more data via Wi-Fi compared to last quarter, while all the other mobile operators registered a decline in terms of the volume of data downloaded over Wi-Fi.
As for the average usage time per consumer on a daily basis, only Verizon Wireless managed to post an increase in this specific metric, with all other carriers showed a decrease. The Big Red added over 20 minutes of Wi-Fi usage to the daily user average, as well as a few minutes to cellular usage.
FierceWireless’ report also sheds some light on the percentage of time mobile users used any app on Wi-Fi in the last six months. Across all major wireless carriers, time based Wi-Fi share has risen, which is an improvement over the previous six month period (earlier in 2016), wherein all operators posted a decrease.
During the first three months of this year, Facebook has remained the most used mobile app in terms of app usage time, specifically on the networks of Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Interestingly on Sprint’s network, the most used apps are Google Chrome and YouTube.
