Samsung probably can argue that it is responsible for making curved, edge to edge displays fashionable, especially with its more recent Galaxy lineup of smartphone devices. But soon, it will not be able to boast of being the only one phone maker to offer such stylish screens. Another South Korean mobile giant, LG, is also looking to join in on the curvy fun.
According to a report recently published by South Korean website The Investor, LG is apparently boosting the production of curved OLED (organic light emitting diode) display screens, and there is a strong likelihood that the successor of last year’s LG V20 (which will probably be called the LG V30) will come with a curved OLED front panel.
To date, one of the biggest suppliers of curved OLED display screens is Samsung Display, and signs indicate that it will likely ramp up production in the next few months or years. It makes sense for mobile manufacturers to go for OLED screen tech. OLED panels are generally considered to be better at rendering graphics in contrast, and at the same time, offer far more efficient power consumption capabilities, at least when compared to LCD displays. A few years back, Samsung and Nokia were the only phone maker brands that make full use of OLED display screens in their respective handset products. But lately, other manufacturers have joined the party -- Google’s Pixel devices feature OLED tech, with the OnePlus 3 smartphone also doing the same. And for the first time ever in its history, Apple is even expected to release an iPhone that is equipped with an OLED front panel.
Like Samsung Display, LG Display also builds curved OLED display screens, even for other brands. Xiaomi’s phablet, the Mi Note 2, for instance, is fitted with an OLED front panel produced by LG Display. As reported by The Investor, there is a good chance that LG Display will end up becoming the supplier of OLED screens for the upcoming LG V30 phablet. Previous V devices, like the LG V10 and the LG V20, both pack generous 5.7 inch displays. But if LG goes for a curved V handset, it just might get more love from consumers.
Moreover, Apple is said to be fully shifting to OLED display screens for its upcoming iPhone devices before the end of this decade, and it may also acquire LG Display’s services in supplying the panels needed. It was reported back in November of last year that Apple may be courting both Samsung Display and LG Display to provide the OLED screens for future smartphone releases.
