In recent months, various mobile operators have started giving away goodies in a bid to retain their existing customers. Some may remember that major US wireless carrier T-Mobile had started offering pizza last year (with mixed results), and rival AT&T joined in on the fun by official launching its own rewards program called AT&T Thanks. Of course, perhaps the most recent example is the rebranded Virgin Mobile’s $1 wireless service special offer, which was launched just a few days ago.
This time around, AT&T’s prepaid arm, Cricket Wireless, is also showing that it too can play that game. The carrier has announced that it will be offering discounted gift cards and even hold raffles for exciting items like a new smartphone device, or even tickets to the House of Blues. Cricket is promising to give away these goodies during a Cricket Rewards Week that will be happening this coming June 26th to June 30th.
Apart from offering discounted gift cards and other goodies by way of its new rewards program, Cricket Wireless also officially launched a new corporate social responsibility platform called Cricket Cares earlier this month. One of the first projects of the Cricket Cares initiative is a soon to be launched collaborative effort with Rebuilding Together (more on this later). The project is called Connecting Communities, and it aims to revitalize communities across the United States. The joint program will begin in 5 cities -- namely Baltimore (MD), Detroit (MI), Miami (FL), Minneapolis (MN), and Seattle (WA). Cricket is looking to funnel $25,000 in each of these cities, and the money will be used to fund various revitalization projects, of which there are 15 in all.
For those not familiar with Rebuilding Together, it is an American national non-profit organization that aims to improve people’s lives by improving the security and health of their residences, jump starting economic development initiatives, and coordinating with local officials in order to create or bring more opportunities for communities in need. With the help of Cricket Wireless, the Rebuilding Together organization is looking to officially launch the Connected Communities project in the next few weeks.
Some may remember that AT&T, the parent company of Cricket Wireless, had debuted its fixed wireless Internet service in Georgia back in April earlier this year. Part of the objective of that roll out was to provide online connectivity to rural and underserved neighborhoods, and in the process, encourage the creation of more economic opportunities, healthier community engagement, and even improved access to education.
